How to film it

Five minutes at the pool is all we need.

Everything we need is two short clips filmed on a phone. No underwater case, no special goggles, nothing to buy. Here is exactly where to stand and what to send.

Where to stand

Two clips, two positions

One from the side, one from the end. Between them we can see almost everything on the list of common problems.

Where to stand at the pool A pool seen from above. Position one is at the side of the pool, halfway along, filming the swimmer as they pass. Position two is at the end of the pool, filming the swimmer head on as they swim toward the camera. SWIMMER 1 SIDE OF THE POOL 2 END
The pool seen from above. Stand at 1 for the first clip, at 2 for the second. Any pool long enough for four or five strokes will do.
  1. Film one length from the side

Stand at the side of the pool, halfway along. Start recording before they push off and keep recording until they reach the far end. Let them swim past you. Do not walk alongside them and do not zoom.

  2. Film one length head on

Move to the end of the pool and film them swimming straight toward you. This is the clip that shows us what the hands and the head are doing, which is where most problems start.

  3. Email both clips

Attach them, or upload them anywhere you like and paste the link. Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud, an unlisted YouTube video, whatever is easiest. We are not fussy.

Get it right first time

The five things that make a clip unusable

If in doubt, send it anyway. We will tell you if we need another go, and we will not start the clock until we have something we can read.

If they cannot swim a full length, that is fine and it changes nothing. Film what they do up to the point where they start to struggle, and stop there. That is the part we need. If the hang-up is bigger, if they will not get in or will not put their face in, send no video at all and just email us. We will start with work out of the water.

Where to send everything

Put the clips or the link in an email, and tell us these four things so we are not guessing.

Would you rather just talk?

Say so in the email and we will set up a call instead. Filming is the better option, because watching the swimmer turns up things you would never think to mention. But a conversation gets us most of the way there, and it beats not starting.

What happens next

Within 24 hours of your clips arriving

You get at least three things you can act on: the problem named, what is causing it, the drills that undo it, in the order to do them, and what to say from the side of the pool while it is happening. It comes back in whatever form suits the problem, a written plan, a video with the footage marked up, or a phone call.

Not bought yet?

The Stroke Diagnosis is $47, one time. Send the clips and you get at least three fixes you can act on within 24 hours, as a marked-up video or on a call.
